Codesigning person-centred quality indicators with diverse communities: A qualitative patient engagement study

Effective engagement of underrepresented communities in health research and policy remains a challenge due to barriers that hinder participation. Our study had two objectives: (1) identify themes of person-centred care (PCC) from perspectives of diverse patients/caregivers that would inform the development of person-centred quality indicators (PC-QIs) for evaluating the quality of PCC and initiatives to improve PCC and (2) explore innovative participatory approaches to engage ethnocultural communities in qualitative research. Incorporating patient and community voices requires addressing issues related to equity and understanding barriers to effective and meaningful engagement.

Impact of ‘Enhanced’ Intermediate Care Integrating Acute, Primary and Community Care and the Voluntary Sector in Torbay and South Devon, UK

Intermediate care (IC) was redesigned to manage more complex, older patients in the community, avoid admissions and facilitate earlier hospital discharge. The service was ‘enhanced’ by employing GPs, pharmacists and the voluntary sector to be part of a daily interdisciplinary team meeting, working alongside social workers and community staff (the traditional model). Enhancing IC through greater acute, primary care and voluntary sector integration can lead to more complex, older patients being managed in the community, with modest impacts on service efficiency, system activity, and notional costs off-set by perceived benefits.

Why Bhutan needs a policy push on person-centred care

Delivering quality healthcare services to people has become a core issue for the Bhutanese healthcare system. There are considerable challenges for healthcare policymakers to recognise and implement an appropriate healthcare model to enhance quality healthcare services in the Bhutanese healthcare system. Actions to improve quality healthcare services in Bhutan requires careful analysis of the healthcare model in the context of the Bhutanese socio-political and healthcare environment. This article provides a brief concept analysis of person-centred care in the context of the Bhutanese socio-political and healthcare environment and describes why it is important to integrate person-centred care into the healthcare system. The article argues that person-centred care is important and relevant to the Bhutanese healthcare system to achieve quality healthcare services and Gross National Happiness.

Person-centred sexual and reproductive health: A call for standardized measurement

Person-centred sexual and reproductive health (PCSRH) care refers to care that is respectful of and responsive to people's preferences, needs, and values, and which empowers them to take charge of their own sexual and reproductive health (SRH). It is an important indicator of SRH rights and quality of care. Despite the recognition of the importance of PCSRH, there is a gap in standardized measurement in some SRH services, as well as a lack of guidance on how similar person-centred care measures could be applied across the SRH continuum. Drawing on validated scales for measuring person-centred family planning, abortion, prenatal and intrapartum care, we propose a set of items that could be validated in future studies to measure PCSRH in a standardized way. A standardized approach to measurement will help highlight gaps across services and facilitate efforts to improve person-centred care across the SRH continuum.
